CHAPTER HISTORY

Mu Sigma
"The Formative Years"

During the 1920s, it was a rarity to find more than ten members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in one city, making it difficult to establish a graduate chapter. However, throughout the Hampton Roads area and Elizabeth City, North Carolina, a group of visionary and dedicated women came together on September 1, 1929, to charter the first chapter in Virginia, Mu Sigma.  In the early 1940s, Mu Sigma was reorganized to include only Norfolk sorors. The name was retained until Grand Chapter began designating chapters by location; thus, Mu Sigma became the Norfolk Alumnae Chapter.

Legacy of Excellence

As we celebrate nearly a century of impact, the Norfolk Alumnae Chapter remains a beacon of positive change, rooted in the enduring values that define Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Known as the premier chapter (the first chapter chartered in the South Atlantic Region), we continue to reflect on our history while looking forward to the future with a renewed sense of purpose. Standing as a testament to the power of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action – the Norfolk Alumnae Chapter will continue to inspire and impact future generations.
